Note from Philip: Actually a 1936 Ford Roadster with a 283 Corvette engine and Lincoln Zepher transmission. Lee Swisshelm built the car, applying 8 coats of hand-rubbed black lacquer. Gary would drive it for "timing," but was hesitant to go all out. Several times I drove for competition. The car had capped lakers for exhaust. Ran the car for timing with the caps closed. Idled up to the staging area with the caps open, then stood on it. A real head turner that looked and sounded stock until you stood on it with the caps open. Drew a crowd when we returned to the pit area. Most thought it had a stock flat-head in it until you made a full-out run. A real sleeper. Loved that car. Wanted to buy it from Marcella when she owned it. It was tarp covered minus the engine and transmission. Larry Ledford bought it, restored it, then sold it to a Californian.

I moved to California with $800 in my pocket, went on to tour the world for 25 years (did laser shows in 40 countries), owned and lived on a banana plantation in Brazil where I met my wife, met numerous rock stars and for the last 20 years have owned and operated an ice skating rink. I guess you could say an extremely varied life! Pretty wild with everything to tell in between.
Danny Joe and Margaret as the Chieftain and the Cowgirl--Christmas afternoon 1958 at Marcella's house. This snapshot was taken with a brand-new-at-the-time Polaroid camera, possibly by Uncle Ralph.
It was always fun to hang out with Danny Joe. And if we were at his mom's house, you could also hope for some of her great orange cake n special occasions. A short walk away was also Aunt Marie's house, and we spent fun time there, too.
